Appeal from Raksha Nepal to help the earthquake affected people

The devastating natural calamity earthquake that occurred on the day of 25th of April, 2015 in Nepal did a big damage to different districts along with the capital city, Kathmandu. A havoc destruction of properties including cultural heritages, psychological fears, and causalities are the remaining effects of the disaster. The earthquake not only did physical damages but also has created several other effects.

  1. Raksha Nepal is a social humanitarian organization and has been working for the sexually exploited girls, women and their children from the last eleven years since its establishment in 2004. We, the Raksha Nepal have been providing protection, education, shelter and food for thirty five children of sexually exploited and vulnerable women who mainly work in the entertainment sectors. Due to the earthquake the children are in trauma and fear. Their child psychology has been affected and they are in psychological stress. In order to cope with the situation, Raksha Nepal is giving a counseling treatment for the children from the psychologist doctor. However, the counseling is not sufficient; the physical, mental and social health of children should be sound to make a child healthy. Thus, in order to make the tender age children stable, psychotherapy, sports and excursion are an urgent need for the children at present.

  1. The earthquakehas done more effect to the poor, especially the women who work in the massage parlor, dance bar and cabin restaurants. They are on the street now because due to the earthquake they do not have a place to live. Their rented room is cracked and their houses in the villages have been destroyed. They are homeless now. Raksha Nepal has given a temporary shelter for about one hundred to those women and their children. The Raksha Nepal has managed a temporary shelter in the premises of Silver Mountain College School of Hotel Management. The earthquake affected people have been supported by food, clothes and security.

However, the situation of women is worse. The sexually exploited and vulnerable women who were in a very painful situation had been helped and rehabilitated in their own villages in different districts by Raksha Nepal before. But the women now do not remain safe and comfortable because their houses in the villages have been destroyed by the big quake and they are in the street again. Raksha Nepal rescued them from the street and has kept in the temporary shelter. Although, it is not a permanent solution. The Silver Mountain College School of Hotel Management is running the classes and Raksha Nepal will have to evacuate the temporary shelter very soon. Hence, there is an urgency to find a temporary shelter for the rehabilitation of the vulnerable women.

  1. Similarly, distribution of relief to the earthquake victims has become a big challenge. It has been heard that only the people who are connected by roadways and transportation services and those voices are heard are only benefitted and have received some relief from the government and other organizations. But the people who are in remote places and whose voices are unheard have got nothing. Therefore, Raksha Nepal decided to reach those vulnerable and underprivileged groups. On the day of 5th and 6th of May 2015, Raksha Nepal visited two different remote places of Kavre and Lalitpur districts for the distribution of relief. The place where the Raksha Nepal distributed relief of Lalitpur district was Malta, a five hour drive from the ring road of Kathmandu.

The affected people were distributed tripals (tents), a pack of thirty kg rice, lentils, edible oil and a pack of salt. The people seem to be very happy and thanked the Raksha Nepal team for invaluable help in the needy time. Apart from this, Raksha Nepal also did relief distribution program on the day of the 9th of May in Dhading district where there was a huge causality of more than 70 people and more than 65 people got injured. Voiceless, backward Tamang and Chepang community people reside in the place. We hope that the relief distributed will help a small family of the community to survive up to a month. The affected people said that they had not received any help from any other sides before we reached there.

Again, there is going to be a big problem for the vulnerable women to receive any types of funds, subsidies or reliefs from the government sides. It is a known fact that the government assists the earthquake affected people on the basis of legal documents such as: citizenship certificate or land ownership evidence certificate. However, the vulnerable women lack such documents because the sexually exploited women are stigmatized and excluded by the society. They have a no chance to hold such credentials. Hence the women again will be traumatized from double sides. In order to make the women self reliant, they should be given some income generating skills and training that would make them independent. Furthermore, seed money is also needed for them in order to run their own businesses after the training. But the most important thing is that the women need clothes, ration and money to live up to minimum three months time. For this, a big help is needed for Raksha Nepal from all the well-wishers to protect the women.

At this juncture, Raksha Nepal offerssincere thanks to all of our adored friends, well – wishers who had been supporting us directly or indirectly since our establishment. We are also highly indebted to all of our friends for arranging support and relief stuffs for the earthquake victims. We offer many thanks to Raksha Nepal staffs and all the volunteers who make a big effort to help the victims in this time of crisis. At the minute, your even a small assistance would make a big difference. At the mean time, Raksha Nepal wants to offer a heartfelt condolence to the deceased family and pray the god for the speedy recovery of the injured people. In this minute of sorrow, Raksha Nepal also makes an appeal to all the people around the world to help the affected people in whatever ways you could and wherever you are. Thank you.
