Musical Therapy for quake affected students!!

The earthquake of 25 April 2015 became un-forgetful in the minds of Nepalese people because it was very devastating and took the lives of about 9000 people leaving 17000 wounded and destroyed almost houses of Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha and Gorkha districts. Several houses remain damaged, including Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts. The quake was big in terms of magnitude till recorded in Nepal. It was recorded as 7.6 magnitude .

The people throughout the middle and western development regions of Nepal were very much shocked and were panicked by the tremor. Among them, school going children were very much affected, they were in trauma and they were not psychologically and mentally sound. The psychology was surrounded by fear and threats thinking that the big quake will repeat again. The children might have more traumatized due to the innumerable aftershocks.

The government of Nepal decided to re-open the schools for 31st of May 2015. However, the children were not free of tension from the aftershocks. Realizing these entire problems, Raksha Nepal (RN) a humanitarian organization decided to help the children through psycho-social counseling and entertainment programs. In coordination with the Raksha Nepal and Nepal Fedaration of Journalists, Kavre the program was organized by Youth Activity for Motherland and Mahendra Memorial Trust of Kavrein theIndreswor highschol’s football ground of Panauti Municipality, Kavre.

In Panauti, several hundreds of students from Kavre districts participated very excitingly. The Raksha Nepal also had taken thirty students residing in the shelter at the spot. The students were on a reserved micro bus and were led by the chairperson Ms. Menuka Thapa. The journey was about one and a quarter hour long. The children enjoyed inside the vehicle by singing songs throughout the travelling distance.

The program started at 11.00 AM. Many distinguished artists, singers and media personality participated in the program. The Chief district officer, head of district police and head of the Nepal army of nearby barrack also attended the program as chief guests. The renowned media personality and director of Kantipur Television Mr. Bhusan Dahal, popular artist Karishma Manandhar, First Nepali Tara singer Deepak Limbu, Popular Singer Badri Pangeni Advocate cum Managing Director of Nepal One Television and young pop singer Astha Rawat’s participation in the program made the audiences cheerful and exciting.

School children danced a lot when the songs were played. The promising singers left no stones unturned to make the children happy. The dance of Raksha Nepal’s children added beauty of the program. Speakers of the program such as: Bhusan Dahal, Swagat Nepal, Karishma Manandhar, representative of the Higher Secondary School Association and Journalists described how to remain safe in an earthquake, what to do if the quake occur and also advised how to remain happy and remain stress less . They also gave several examples to live a joyful life. The students participated were seem to be relaxed, cheerful and contented.

At the concluding part of the program Chairperson of Raksha Nepal Ms. Menuka Thapa handover token of love to all the distinguished guests. The program was over at 5.00 P.M. All of the Raksha Nepal’s children returned Kathmandu by the micro-bus and they also sang songs throughout the way. Overall, the program was refreshing and commendable. The audiences of the program appreciated it and said that it was a very good initiative to keep the fear of the earthquake and its aftershocks far away from their child’s mind.

Overall, the program venue was forty-five km far and it took about one and a half hours by a micro-bus to reach there. The children of Raksha Nepal were seen to be a bit tired; however, they got an opportunity to perform a dance in the program and could indulge in the performance of promising artists which made them refresh. The entertainment program made them feel some relief from the hangover of tremor helped them to become stress-less. The children who had already fallen prey of sexual violence and encountered rape had been more traumatized by the earthquake. The main aim of Raksha Nepal in co-coordinating and participating in the program was to give relief to the children so that they could overcome from the mental trauma.
